Where is miata oil filter
The real key is to find peace with the idea you are going to spill half the filter worth of oil and never really get it all cleaned up.
Everything flows from that point. It's what you know that isn't so. Not sure why this is such a big problem. Get a "cap" type oil filter wrench, one that you can put a breaker bar into or get a box end on, stick it on the filter from the top and use the wrench to losen the filter, same with install.
You still have to get an arm down there to put it on, but the wrench does the work. Or do the same thing from the wheel well. Originally Posted by gtxhawaii.

I was wary after I read of the "hard to change oil filter", but I went to my car, located the filter, and tried on a cold engine a practice run. I am 6'2"and lbs with larger than average hands. So after a drive I was ready.
I reached in with my right hand, broke it loose and loosened it a bit. Then finished the loosening with my left hand. I had gloves and held it up so no oil leaked out. I reached in from the front with my right hand, as others have mentioned, and was able to hold it with right hand and lift it out with left hand without spilling.
Yes, it was my first miata filter change and I did incur quick manifold contact Next time I think I can avoid injury! All in all, not too bad.
Mad Swede. What a bunch of whiners! I have done dozens of oil changes on my '96, and am doing the 2nd one on my '91 this morning. I do the '96 from below. I carefully stuff a large disposable diaper under the filter, reach up, and loosen the filter. Since i do all my own, they always come off with hand pressure since i don't over tighten. Never need any kind of wrench. I let it drain into the diaper, then remove when it stops draining. There is no way to reach down from the top, although I have not removed the brace yet.
Not sure if that would help. I also don't remove the tire or the plastic shield. I do the job on ramps with the nose facing downhill so the car is essentially level.
If i am really feeling like going the extra mile, i will jack up the driver's side with the rear wheel chocked, just to drain the extra cup of oil out. On my '91, I found that the filter can be accessed from the top. I have had the brace off to do belts, but put it back on. It really isn't in the way all the much, especially if you don't need to use a wrench.
By the way, nitrile gloves keep your hands clean and provide grip on the filter just don't get them oily before you loosen the filter. Originally Posted by Jerry Taylor. I got it somewhat tight with the 1 arm method but i'm not sure if thats enough. I'll most likely take off the wheel to get in there and make sure everything is good. I used a plastic bag also wrapped around the filter worked fairly good. If you're not bleeding, you didn't do it right! On the 1. Find More Posts by tom All times are GMT The time now is Join us now! At this price why bother with a cheap clone? In fact, why does anyone sell an oil filter without a drain plug washer?
By Alan Swan. Drain plug washer included with filter is for Mk1. You will need to order a Mk2 washer for a 2 or 2. Apart from that the filter and delivery were up to MX-5 Parts usual service.
